How to Choose Your Moab Adventure

The best Moab tours match your group, your timing, and your comfort level — not just your bravest friend's wish list. Run through the six questions here, then jump to the adventure categories to find your fit. If you would rather have the whole trip mapped for you, our free Moab vacation planner builds an itinerary around your answers.

Local tip: Book your one "must do" adventure first, then plan hikes, scenic drives, and park days around it. Tour departure times are fixed; trailheads wait for you.

⏱️ How much time do you have?

Half day tours are perfect for travel days and tight itineraries. Full day trips unlock the remote backcountry and the biggest canyon views.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Who is in your group?

Kids and first timers do great on scenic floats, easy jeep tours, and beginner friendly canyons. Thrill seekers can chase steeper lines.

🌡️ What season are you visiting?

Spring and fall are prime for almost everything. Summer shines on the river and on early morning tours. Winter is quiet and surprisingly fun. See our seasonal guide.

🔥 What kind of adventure do you want?

Choose your flavor: adrenaline, scenery, new skills, or something that mixes all three. Moab has an option for every mood.

🧭 Guided or self guided?

Guided trips are the easiest way to go bigger safely. Self guided plans work great for hiking and some biking routes when you have good info.

🚙 Do you want to ride or drive?

For maximum scenery without stress, book a tour. If you have a capable vehicle and real experience, grab a route guide and go at your own pace.

Good to Know

Moab Adventures FAQ

What is the best adventure for first time visitors?
For most first timers, a half day guided canyoneering trip or a scenic Colorado River float hits the sweet spot: big scenery, no experience required, and enough time left to explore Arches National Park the same day. If anyone in your group loves driving, a guided jeep tour on Hells Revenge is the classic Moab introduction.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
Yes — especially from March through May and September through October. Popular half day tours and sunset slots often sell out one to two weeks ahead in peak season, and holiday weekends can book out a month in advance. In summer and winter you can often book a few days out, but morning slots in July and August go first because of the heat.
Are there adventures that work for families with kids?
Plenty. Calm water rafting trips welcome kids as young as 4, beginner canyons like Bow and Arrow Canyon work well for adventurous kids around 8 and up, and jeep tours suit all ages. Add easy hikes like Corona Arch and a stop at Dead Horse Point for a full family friendly itinerary.
What should I bring on most guided adventures?
Closed toe shoes with good grip, at least two liters of water per person, sunscreen, a hat, and layers for the desert's 30 to 40 degree daily temperature swings. Outfitters provide the technical gear — harnesses, helmets, ropes, and life jackets. For river trips, add a swimsuit, quick dry clothing, and a strap for your sunglasses.
How do I plan around heat and crowds?
In summer, book morning tour slots, spend midday on the river or in shaded canyons, and save hikes for sunrise or the last two hours before sunset. For crowds, go midweek when you can. Note that Arches no longer requires timed entry reservations in 2026, so arriving early is now the best way to beat the entrance line.
