Moab trip planning by month
Best Time to Visit Moab
Weather, crowds and what is open every month of the year, from National Park Service numbers, so you can pick the dates that fit your trip.
When to visit Moab: the short answer
The short answer
For most trips, the best time to visit Moab is April through May or mid September through October, the seasons the Park Service calls temperate and most popular. Average highs run from 71°F to 88°F. They are also the busiest. For fewer people, come in March, November or winter.
Moab sits next to two national parks, and its calendar follows theirs. From March through October, Arches recorded more than 140,000 visits every single month in 2025. From December through February, it never topped 52,000. Weather swings just as hard: an average July day reaches 100°F, and a January night drops to 22°F.
So the right month depends on what matters most to you. If you want comfortable hiking and do not mind company, book spring or fall early. If you want empty trails, come in winter and pack for cold. If your dates are fixed in summer, you can still have a great trip by hiking at sunrise and spending afternoons on the Colorado River.

Local tip: In busy months, plan to enter Arches before 8 am or after 3 pm. The Park Service says entrance lines are longest from 8 am to 3 pm, spring through fall, and in summer many trailhead parking lots fill by 7:30 am. Sunset visits are quieter, and the light on the fins is worth it.

Best time to visit Moab for your kind of trip
There is no single best month. Here is how the calendar lines up with what you want to do, including when a season is a poor fit.
| Your trip | Aim for | Why, and what to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Hiking in Arches and Canyonlands | April to May, mid September to October | The Park Service's temperate seasons, with highs from 71°F to 88°F. Expect full parking lots, so start early. |
| Avoiding crowds | November to February | Arches had 31,870 to 84,413 visits a month in that stretch in 2025, against 142,337 or more every month from March to October. Bring warm layers and traction for icy trails. |
| Rafting and river days | April to September | Sheri Griffith River Expeditions, for one, runs daily Colorado River float trips April through September. On a 95°F afternoon, the river is the coolest place to be. |
| Mountain biking | March to May, October to November | Average highs of 56°F to 82°F in those months. Summer riding means a sunrise start. |
| Families on school break | June to August, planned around heat | Highs of 93°F to 100°F. Hike at dawn, rest midday, and save river trips and scenic drives for the afternoon. Not the month for long exposed hikes with kids. |
| Off roading | Spring and fall | Busy trails around Easter. See our guide to the best time to off road in Moab. |
| Night skies | Year round; longest nights in winter | Canyonlands is a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park. Winter gives the most hours of darkness, summer the warmest nights outside. |
| Fiery Furnace with a ranger | Spring through fall | Ranger led tours run spring through fall. Self guided permits are $10 per person and often sell out in the busy season. |
| Lower hotel rates | December to February | Utah's tourism office notes lower hotel rates and the most solitude in winter. Confirm tour schedules before you book. |
